Winning With Systems

The more numbers you play in a system, the more chances you have to win, as you will enter more lines into the draw. You also have the chance of winning multiple prizes, as each line is generated from the same range of numbers.

For example, if you played a 7+1 system and one of your lines matched all six main numbers and the Viking number drawn, your six other lines would also win a prize in a lower tier, as shown below:

Numbers Played in System Winning Vikinglotto Numbers Drawn
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 + Viking 8 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 + Viking 8

2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 + Viking 8 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 + Viking 8 5 + 1 Tier

If you play a 10+2 system and one line matches all six numbers plus the Viking number, 389 of your other lines would also win a prize. The following tables show how many of your lines would win when playing some of the most common systems.

Types of Vikinglotto Scams

There are several Vikinglotto scams that you should look out for. They include:

Mobile

You might receive a text message saying you have won a prize after your number was randomly selected to win. These types of promotion do not exist, and Vikinglotto would never inform you of such a win via text message. Do not follow any links sent in suspicious text messages.

Telephone

Scammers sometimes pose as official lottery representatives over the telephone. They will ask you for your bank details and personal information so they can send your prize to you. Never give these types of details out to strangers over the phone.

Social Media

The rise of social media has enabled a new type of scam, in which you receive a message via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat or another social media platform, saying you are the winner of a lottery prize. Always remember that you cannot enter Vikinglotto through any social media platform and you would never be informed of a win via social media. You can only play online through authorised lottery concierge services and offline at authorised ticket retailers.

Letter

In a postal scam, you would receive a letter informing you of a lottery win. The letter might not be addressed to you personally and may just say ‘Dear Winner,’ which is an easy way to tell that it isn’t genuine. The letter might be poorly written or may otherwise look unofficial.

An additional game called the Joker can be played alongside Finland’s Lotto. To play, choose seven numbers between 0 and 9. You can pick the same number more than once. On the night of a draw, a seven-digit Joker number is randomly generated, and you win prizes when you match the same digits in the same place.

For example, if the Joker number generated is 1291268, the number 1234567 would win because it matches three digits in the same place: 12***6*. The more numbers you match, the bigger the prize.

The cost of playing Joker is €2, and you can also play Double Joker for an extra €1. The Double Joker game is played in the same way, except that when the last digit of the Joker number is matched, any prizes you win are doubled.

Joker prizes are fixed amounts. The value of the jackpot is set by lottery providers Veikkaus before the draw and although it is usually set at €1 million (€2 million for Double Joker) it can change from draw to draw.

Below you can see the prizes available in Finland’s Joker and the odds of winning in each tier.

October 2013

Prizes

Some of the Lotto prizes are fixed amounts and some are calculated on a pari-mutuel basis, which means they depend on how many tickets are sold and how many winners there are in each tier. The prize tiers for matching five and six numbers, or six numbers plus the bonus, each receive a set percentage of the total prize fund. The remaining money is then used to pay out the fixed-value prizes, including the jackpot.

The value of the jackpot is determined by lottery provider Veikkaus before the draw. If it is not won in a given draw, it will roll over to the next one and will continue to do so until someone wins it.

What to Look Out For

Lottery scams can be quite easy to spot if you know what to look out for. Follow these simple steps and you should be able to identify whether a piece of correspondence is a scam or genuine:

  • Scammers will often state that there is a certain timeframe in which you need to contact them to collect your prize. This is to pressurise you and rush you into giving them your details before you seek any advice or properly think about the decision you are making.
  • If you are told you must keep your win confidential, this is another sign that something could be too good to be true. Scammers will do this to stop you from mentioning your win to someone else who might see that it isn’t genuine.
  • Letters sent to you through the post or via email by scammers often have spelling mistakes and poor grammar. These can be a sign that English is not the first language of the senders; official communications would be unlikely to have these problems.
